![]() Welcome to my site!
I was originally trained and certified by the Aubrey Willis School of piano tuning and repair in 1980, combined with mentoring by a well known piano technician from Montreal. I have since developed the keen ear, and feel for the piano action and "setting the pin" that is vital to making the piano sound and feel crisp and fresh, and this can only be achieved through years of experience. I have been tuning pianos for the last 35 years. I was trained to tune by ear. I still prefer aural tuning since it is the human ear that will be the final judge when the tuning is complete. Piano technicians applying for membership in the Piano Technicians Guild can achieve Registered Technician status using an electronic aid but they also have to receive a passing grade on their tuning test without it. After years of tuning entirely by ear, I will occasionally use an electronic tuning aid on some pianos. I still consider my tuning to be aural tuning. I use the tuning aid to get the piano close before going back over the piano for the final tuning. The concept of electronic tuning precision is a subject of debate. Some will say that no tuning device will tune a piano as well as a well trained tuner can achieve by ear. Electronic tuning aid or not, it is always the technician that is responsible for the end result. I have access to any parts that most pianos may need, and can take care of sticking keys, broken parts, or any action issues. I am located in the Halifax area, but not opposed to traveling an hour or so in either direction. Please click here to contact me! |
